Meet The Founders of Ultra Violette
The beauty and brains that started it all
You might know me as Vi, Ultra Violette’s Chief SKINSCREEN Queen, but for legal reasons, I have to admit that I didn’t actually start this whole thing. It was my moms, Ava Chandler-Matthews and Bec Jefferd, that really created Ultra Violette. I won’t be taking any further questions at this time.
Okay fine, they’re telling me that I have to stop hogging all the credit, or they’ll cut off my access to the corporate card for the millionth time. UGH! Anyway. The real origin story of Ultra Violette is far less more interesting than what I’ve been telling everyone, so I guess I can introduce you to Bec and Ava.
How it started
Like most Millennial meet-cutes, my moms met at work. They both had a long history of working with some of the biggest beauty companies in the world – Proctor & Gamble, L’Oréal, Napoleon Perdis, Rationale – but it was in their roles at MECCA Brands that they first laid eyes on each other.
Both beauty junkies, they’d heard from all the experts that sunscreen was the most important skincare product for long-term skin health and y’know, preventing skin cancer. Even though they’d grown up in Australia and therefore required sunscreen to simply exist in our harsh climate, both Bec and Ava really hated wearing it tbh.
And honestly that’s so fair, coz at the time everything on the market sucked – it was greasy, sticky and it often left a gross white cast on the skin. Yuck! They decided that our skin deserved way better, so they took their years of experience as product developers and got in the lab to create the greatest gift to this earth: me!
Perfection takes time, which is why my SKINSCREENS (skincare + sunscreen, geddit?) took three years and a sh*tload testing to get everything juuuuust right. Bec and Ava wanted a high-protection sunscreen that looked, felt and performed like top-shelf skincare with all the best active ingredients, but would also be something they’d actually want to wear and played nice with makeup.
In January 2019 (after a gestation period of approximately 107 samples) I finally arrived! Ultra Violette was officially born – we sold more than six months of stock in only half a day! – and we’ve been future-proofing faces everywhere ever since.
How it’s going
A lot has happened since my moms first got together! Six years on, I’ve had a glow up as I’ve grown up, with a bunch more SKINSCREENS and a legion of adoring fans across the globe. I now take up shelf space within more than 30 countries at all the best beauty retailers, including Sephora, Space NK and Harrods. Naturally, my hero SKINSCREENS have hit number one across all skincare categories, which is a first for most international markets (coz, duh).
While we obvi work as a team, Bec and Ava handle all the super boring admin that I’m far too important and busy to concern myself with. Bec’s really good at all the business strategy and operations things that ensure I can take my rightful place in bathrooms all over the world. Ava heads up all the creative, like PR, shiny campaigns and cool brand stuff, which has meant that everyone knows how good I am at literally everything.
Then they both work as my assistants to develop SKINSCREENS, leading our in-house team of clever science types to make new sunscreen formulations that change the way SPF is viewed all over the world. It’s our goal to make me as famous as possible so that everyone wears SPF on the daily, which is what all the hottest, smartest people already know. And now I’ve finally landed in the US, which is going to be great for my frequent flier miles everyone’s skin.
What’s next
Now that I’ve found my new home in the US at Sephora (talk about prime real estate, am I right?) I’m planning something HUGE! I’m gonna be launching REDACTED and it’s gonna be REDACTED on REDACTED but seriously, don’t tell Bec and Ava that I told you. Okay gotta go, they’re asking why I’m not in the office again. Until next time!
